University of St Thomas understands that 83% of human learning is visual and that the students of today expect Video to be a part of the educational experience.

Highly engaged learners: Students completed Squigl based assignments at a 56% over assignment completion in 2016.

Improved performance and understanding: Students averaged an increase of half a grade in 2017 in their overall semester grades from the same class offered in 2016.

Opportunity

The University of St. Thomas is known for its leadership in adopting technology that transcends legacy learning tools. At the University professors, students and faculty “all are pursuing their own unique goals while living in a community supporting them every step of the way”

The University strives to the educational experience through a variety of teaching, learning and assessing methods. And for all the skills and knowledge being disseminated at the University the ability to gauge the full understanding of a students the use of the video was still finding its place in the education lifecycle as professors and students continued the traditional knowledge transfer from teachers to students without the aid of visual understanding – as is illustrated in this case study.

Solution

Dr. Odeh Muhawesh, Professor of Theology was drawn to Squigl’s intuitive UI and SCORM package ready output for creating video by transforming a learner's text as a direct opportunity to improve the ability to assess a student's understanding beyond textual summaries. With Squigl in their toolset Dr. Muhawesh and Dr. Bill Stevenson, Professor of Seminary, worked together along with their classes to create easy to consume content to preview and recap key lessons – bringing the traditional lecture notes to life. From here they asked students to share their understanding of the Story of Creation. After watching a Squigl introducing the Story of Creation, the students were asked to share their understanding of the subject through Squigl and the results were eye opening.

Seventeen out of twenty-five students in Dr. Muhawesh’s class were able to quickly identify the cross section of history and folklore ensuring that they’re students could be corrected in a mistake that would have otherwise gone unnoticed with text heavy learning.

What's Next

During the first semester with Squigl, Professors focused on engaging their classes with video and as Squigl continues to grow our partnership with professors and teachers Squigl is being leveraged as a way of flipping the classroom to maximize classroom time, offering lecture notes and recaps as easy to consume videos and a different take on the traditional student submitted paper – now with Squigl coming through as an animated video.
